AL: VH The Classic Superhero Origin Story

Have you ever seen Wanted? Yeah, that was another weird movie with a cool concept and great action. So what does that make Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter which is directed by the same person? Well it makes it another weird/cool concept movie directed by Timur Bekmambetov and produced by the famous for being odd Tim Burton. The movie is based off of the book by Seth Grahame-Smith who writes the novel as an autobiography given to the writer by a vampire (Wikipedia.com). I just read the entire synopsis for the book and it sounds amazing and I’m going to go buy it as soon as I’m done typing this post. Nook, if you don’t have one, get one! But if they did right by this novel then this is going to be an insanely awesome movie with a trippy ending.

If you haven’t read what I’ve already said in random other post about this movie I’ll say it again: I thought this was going to be a dumb idea when I first heard about it, but with each new trailer I’m loving it more and more. It looks like it will be a great action movie and if they stick to the script it also gives light to the reasons why behind everything in Lincoln’s life. Why he was an abolitionist, why he really was murdered, why the Union got their butts kicked at first when the war started. Grahame-Smith’s novel plays off of history well from what I can tell and if anything it just makes one of the coolest presidents’ alive even cooler. Not only did he free the slaves, but he also killed vampires. How cooler can a president get? I mean honestly. In the trailers he’s swinging around an axe like it’s a rag doll and chopping down vampires one by one. It’s going to be eye candy and a very intelligent movie due to the play on history that it makes.

Geektryant puts it this way; “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter explores the secret life of our greatest president, and the untold story that shaped our nation. Visionary filmmakers Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov (director of Wanted) bring a fresh and visceral voice to the bloodthirsty lore of the vampire, imagining Lincoln as history's greatest hunter of the undead” (Geektyrant.com).

This is not a normal project, it’s not something you just take on lightly and don’t put everything you got in it. Like I said, when I first heard about it, it was a stupid idea to me. The title alone would generally throw someone off, like Lemonade Mouth, or High School Musical, or Jesus Christ Superstar, or One fish, Two fish, Red fish, Blue fish, or Green Eggs and Ham. See, all those were titles that at some point someone went, WTF, but someone else decided to give it a shot. I don’t know how long it even took Grahame-Smith to get this book published, but considering the fact it had a title like that compared to J.K. Rowling and Stephenie Meyer and Suzanne Collins who had relatively normal titles for their books, it all took them a while to get picked up as well, so I wonder how long it took this book to get it’s notoriety because in all honesty if I was the publisher who first got this delivered to my desk I would have been like, “Yeeeeaah, no. Not at all.”

Well whoever the person was that told Grand Central Publishing to take a closer look was smart because this book only came out two years ago and already has a movie. Took Twilight 3 years, Sorcerer’s Stone took five, and The Hunger Games four. If you want to know more the link to article that has Burton and Bekmambetov talking with the novel’s writer about the movie is below. They compare it to the classic superhero story and go through how it’s dark like Batman and how vengeance leads one man to protect the innocent. How it shows the president for the first time as someone very human that can protect himself. Man, could you imagine if the secret service was in on the whole vampire killing; woo, the vamps would have nowhere to hide, unless the secret service is still messing around with hookers…

Anyway, check out the clip which also gives a ton of new footage. But until next time, According to Michael III, this is going to be one epic movie.
